What a wonderful city: Rome
A heady mix of ruins, inspiring art and vibrant street life, Italy’s capital is one of the world’s most romantic and inspiring cities. Rome will never tire of admiring visitors with its diverse architectural styles and beautiful hilly location.
A trip to Rome, according to the Italians, is about the dolce vita lifestyle embellished with art and culture. Idling around picturesque streets and enveloping aromas are an integral part of Rome. It is worth saying that connoisseurs of modern fine cuisine will find several restaurants here, awarded with Michelin stars, that’s become a tourist attraction itself. But for a truly Roman meal it is worth looking into noisy pizzerias or trattorias. These are where the locals go to dine with friends and indulge their passion for thin, crispy pizzas, pastas, and cool white wines from the nearby hills. And what about gelato and a cup of coffee?
After a hearty lunch, it’s time to explore the sights of Rome. Few cities can rival Rome’s astonishing artistic and architectural heritage. The 3000-year history of the Italian capital can now be traced through all its main attractions: Colosseum, Roman Forum and Pantheon recall the city’s golden age as “the capital of the world”, while its many monumental basilicas testify to its historical role as seat of the Catholic Church. Lording it over the skyline, St Peter’s Basilica is the Vatican’s epic showpiece church – a towering masterpiece of Renaissance architecture; and showy fountains add a baroque flourish to the city’s captivating streets.
Throughout history, the city played a major role in the great upheavals of Western art, expanding the boundaries of creative achievements. As a result, the city is flooded with priceless treasures. Ancient statues adorn world-class museums; Byzantine mosaics and Renaissance frescoes are complemented by baroque facades. Walking around the center and without even trying, you’ll come across masterpieces by the giants of Western art – sculptures by Michelangelo, canvases by Caravaggio, Raphael frescoes and fountains by Bernini.
Rome is a city of beauty, contrasts, life … and sport. As we have already said, the Italian capital was chosen as the venue for the largest HMB event in the world – World Championship of Historical Medieval Battle “Battle of the Nations”. This is not surprising: eclecticism and religiosity, monuments of the medieval epoch, fairy-tale ruins of the center of the Roman Empire and modern technologies are easily intertwined on the streets of the capital. While walking around the city you practically absorb through the skin the history of all eras. No wonder they say that Rome was built to rule the world – everything in this city is “eternal”.
