Dayna Berghan-Whyman had the start of her BotN way with injuries. She came to the Santa Severa castle near Rome to compete in the Battle of the Nations 2018. It was her first HMB World Championship and it brought her a lot of adventures!
“I was the fighter for New Zealand in the Longsword duel, the Sword and Shield and Polearm women’s nominations. I had someone steal my gauntlets, so I had to borrow gauntlets from one of the men from our team. It was a lesson to ALWAYS have someone help you with armour because you don’t want to lose any. Also, because of using borrowed gauntlets I damaged my hand.” – recalls Dayna.
Dayna was broken in her second fight of the melee and had to go to hospital because she was choked by the UK team fighters and temporarily lost the eyesight in her left eye. In the Dayna`s homeland, an article was even published in a local newspaper about this incident. She had to call her mother and ask not to read the news because she was alive and quite healthy.
Of course, there were also a lot of pleasant moments during this BotN – a lot of new friends, beautiful Rome nearby, exciting fights and the whole atmosphere of the Championship. And, of course, new experience in the HMB that improved her as a fighter.
HMBIA News editorial office is happy and proud of Dayna Berghan-Whyman who didn’t leave HMB sport after such a start and continues to fight. Can`t wait to meet her and other HMB athletes on the lists of different HMB tournaments around the globe.
