12 Jun 2019 23:37
Do you know who the HMB marshals are? We are confident that everyone who is involved in HMB sport will say YES. However, do we know everything about them and their work? Let’s not make any assumptions and let’s analyze in more detail the very concept of the “HMB Marshal”. Let’s talk about their duties and about their work. Perhaps after reading this, you too want to pick up the yellow flag?  But, one can definitely say that the purpose of writing this piece is to underline what an incredible responsibility these marshals hold.
They are unarmed and well visible on the field, fighters and captains are arguing about their decisions and rules are enforced. They do everything possible to make HMB a noble and beautiful sport, they ensure the fairness of the game and the safety of the fighter. We asked the HMBIA Marshal Supervisor Sergey Myasishchev to tell us about the work of judges in HMB sports.
So let’s start from the very beginning: who is the HMB marshal?
– Marshal is a person who ensures compliance with all rules and regulations at competitions in Historical Medieval Battle. The marshals are judge directly on the lists – make sure that the fighters do not break the rules, control security issues – in the emergency situations the marshals immediately stop the fight and call a doctor. Marshals make a verdict on the outcome of the battle. In addition, the marshals checks the fighters equipment.

Where did this name come from?
– In general, the word “marshal” originally in medieval Europe meant “the caretaker of stables”. Then the marshals got additional duties. In particular, traditionally, marshals were working at the knight tournament`s. Therefore, in the Historical Medieval Battles, judges are still called marshals.

How dangerous is it to be a marshal in the lists area?
– There is a certain danger. And there are even special safety rules – for example, we always specifically explain to marshal newcomers: “don’t just stand in the center of the lists, never stand in the way of an attacking fighter” – etc. To minimize the risk of accidental injury, the marshals wear special yellow uniforms. And Knight marshals (who most often work directly inside the lists) – in black and yellow, striped.

Who can be a marshal?
– In principle – any adult person. But in fact, of course, it is much easier to adapt to the marshal’s work for those who have gained considerable experience in the HMB as a fighter or a member of the organizing team.

How can you become a marshal? Please describe the procedure from the very beginning.
– There is a clear algorithm here. First of all, you need to contact with the head of the national marshall committee (for example, in Russia it is Sergey Bogonenko). Such committees exist in many countries of the world. Well, if there is no such committee, just then with one of the marshals in your country or even abroad. Then you should get a national Marshal certification: take part in a training seminar, take a theoretical test and get a practical test – work as a trainee in several tournaments. After that, the committee can make a recommendation for an international exam, which also consists of a theoretical test, an interview and a practical test. All tests in the international exam are held in English.

You mentioned a special marshal’s yellow uniform. Where can judges get it?
– One can order an uniform where you want or sew yourself. Regarding the recommended styles you will be advised after passing the exams.

How to become a knight marshal?
– Work a lot as a marshal. HMBIA knight marshal is a high status that testiies to the recognition of special merits in the development of Historical Medieval Battle and the highest professional qualifications. We have only 6 knight marshal in the world so far. Do not confuse the status of “the HMBIA knight marshal” and the position of “the knight marshal on the lists”. Only at the biggest tournaments (for example, Battle of the Nations, Buhurt-Prime or Dynamo Cup) the knights marshals on the lists can be only a HMBIA knight marshals only. At smaller tournaments, ordinary certified marshals may be a knight marshal on the lists.

When can a new marshal get certified?
– Periodically. Follow the news

Is there recertification?
– Yes, of course, there is. There are periodic recertification – confirmation of qualification level. After all, the rules and regulations are changing – it is necessary to control, so that marshals around the world should know the same things. There are emergency recertifications – for example, if a marshal made a serious mistake in his work and for unprofessional actions he may be temporarily suspended from work and he or she should pass a retest.

How many marshals can work in a tournament (minimum and maximum)?
– Depends on the tournament. There are 4 corner marshals and a knight marshal at the duel nominations lists at the same time, 11 marshals should be on the buhurt nominations lists: 8 people on the lines (along the lists bar), two marshals in the field and one knight marshal.

Also you are the head of the HMBIA Marshal`s Committee. What are the functions of the committee?
– The Marshal`s Committee is primarily involved in providing tournaments with qualified Marshals. To do this, conducts training seminars and certification of marshals. Also the Committee is in the constant contact with the organizers of tournaments. Secondly, ongoing work is underway to improve the rules and regulations. Constantly collected and analyzed data obtained from tournaments from around the world, identifies controversial points and inaccuracies of existing documents, making corrections.

As we see, on these strong-willed and dedicated people there is an enormous responsibility both during the tournament and after its completion. After all, the work of the marshal does not end with the awarding of the tournament. This is a constant hard work aimed at improving and developing HMB sports.
HMBIA News would like to thank the HMBIA Marshal Supervisor Sergey Myasishchev for the interview and for all the work that he and his colleagues do every day for everyone who loves HMB sport.

In our next publications even more interesting things about the work of other HMBIA committees and other aspects of HMB life.
